The Cardinal Amateur
Presented by McConnell Golf, The Cardinal Amateur is held at the Sedgefield Country Club Pete Dye Course, formerly known as the Cardinal Golf and Country Club, in Greensboro, North Carolina. Founded in 1978 the competition is an integral part of the journey to the PGA, Senior PGA and Nationwide tours and its former champions include William McGirt and Zach Sucher. The field consists of 78 contestants, chosen among college level and mid - amateurs. Jay Sigel, a winner on the senior tour, has been quoted as saying that the Cardinal Amateur is one of the finest amateur tournaments in the country and one which he wishes he had won during his amateur career.
The Cardinal Amateur established a scholarship fund in 1983 which currently funds a $2,500 scholarship each year to be renewed through the recipient's four - year college career. The Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Memorial Scholarship Fund has provided financial assistance to 34 young people through four years of college. The scholars, drawn from the Guilford County area, are selected primarily on the basis of need.
